One of the largest charitable organizations in the world, SVdP is an international Catholic lay organization that offers person-to-person service to those in need or suffering in their own neighborhoods.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 46.5 million Americans (about 15 percent of the population) are living in poverty, the largest number ever recorded in our nation's history, and it's estimated that more than 20 percent of those are children. The economic downturn has also hit people hard in the Brown County area.

St Vincent de Paul Green Bay traditionally sets aside a significant amount of money from store proceeds for energy assistance, in fact more than any other non-profit, faith-based organization in Green Bay.  Since the beginning of July, SVdP has been one of the last remaining organizations in this community with energy assistance dollars, and after serving 222 households (roughly 646 individuals), this year's funds have run out.  (Forward Service Corporation is able to serve the families with children who have not "maxed out" their emergency benefits within the last 12 months).  In spite of dollars running out, the need continues.  One case in point is a woman in her 70's, on oxygen full-time, behind on her bill, and within days of having her power shut off, she turned to St Vincent de Paul members for help.

The Friends of the Poor® Walk is a simple, visible way to help bring attention to the issue and raise funds to help those in need in our community.

There is no registration fee to walk. All monies collected come from the pledges and donations received.

Every dollar raised in pledge will go toward Energy Assistance in the Brown County area.

"On behalf of St. Vincent de Paul, I want to say how pleased and blessed we are to be able to organize a community wide event such as Friends of the Poor® Walk, in order to bring awareness to the plight of so many who struggle to pay their bills.  I am so very proud to state that 100% of all monies pledged for the walk will directly help 'keep the lights on' for many who face disconnection of their utilities.  Please pledge and support your fellow neighbors in this worthy cause."

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Welcomes You!

St. Vincent de Paul is a volunteer organization "to whom no act of charity is foreign." St. Vincent de Paul is able to provide emergency assistance in many ways, including rent, utilities, clothing, household items, and furniture, just to name a few.

Vincentians are friends to the poor, we are advocates.

St. Vincent de Paul works closely with other organizations and provides referrals to those agencies when appropriate. Last year, through your generous donations of furniture, clothing and other items, the St. Vincent de Paul store was able to generate $878,623.43 in assistance directly back to the community. Families and individuals who find themselves in difficult situations contact the Society for emergency assistance.

But there is a whole lot more to the St. Vincent de Paul story than meets the eye.

All donations are tax-deductible and all proceeds go directly to helping the needy in the Green Bay area.
